What is CRM Journal?
CRM: The Journal of Heritage Stewardship is published by the National Park Service to address the history of, development of, trends, and emerging issues in cultural resource management in the United States and abroad. Its purpose is to broaden the intellectual foundation of the management of cultural resources. CRM Journal is edited in the offices of the National Park Service, in Washington, DC and published twice a year.

Audience
CRM Journal is written for practitioners in the cultural resources fields, including history, architecture, curation, ethnography, archeology, cultural landscapes, folklore, and related areas; scholars in colleges and universities who teach, study, and interpret cultural resources; and other members of the heritage community.

Types of Submissions
CRM Journal publishes several types of materials: (1) scholarly articles that represent original research; (2) summaries of research-in-progress; (3) interviews with leading experts; (4) reviews of exhibitions, websites, books, and technologies; and (5) letters to the editor.

Article Submissions
Generally, manuscripts for major articles must not exceed 6,000 words, exclusive of footnotes and illustrations. Articles must be based on substantive research. Generally, they must provide a hypothesis, descriptions of previous work, methodology, results, conclusions, and bibliography. Articles may include historical perspectives on important cultural resources programs. They may include examples of cultural resource investigations, studies, research projects, and activities that would be of interest to the field as a whole. Examples of articles include the uses of the material remains of an industry that shaped the development of the Nation, a study of archeological sites associated with an early Colonial Era settlement that has implications for expanded interpretation at historic sites, or the development of a particularly effective preservation plan for a large metropolitan area. Articles that represent different points of view may be paired.

Research-in-Progress Reports
Reports on research-in-progress describe current research in cultural resources topics. Generally, submissions of these reports should not exceed 1,000 words and may be accompanied by illustrations.

Interviews
Generally, CRM Journal staff will conduct interviews. However, unsolicited transcribed interviews may be submitted for consideration for publication in CRM Journal. Those planning to undertake an unsolicited interview should contact the CRM Journal editor in advance.

Reviews
Generally, CRM Journal staff will invite individuals to prepare reviews of books, exhibitions, and multimedia materials. However, unsolicited reviews may be submitted for consideration by CRM Journal. Reviews range in length from 500 to 1,200 words.

Illustrations
Illustrations that accompany submissions should be 8" x 10" black-and-white glossy photographs of reproducible quality or original color slides. Digital images must be a minimum of 300 dpi (dots per inch), 4" x 5" in either .jpg or .tif. format. If the file size exceeds 8 megabytes, the image(s) should be placed on a CD and sent by overnight mail (see below). Drawings should be forwarded in their original format also by overnight mail. A caption must be provided for each illustration that describes the relationship of the image to the text. Each caption must provide credits. Authors are responsible for securing permission required to use the image. Illustrations will be returned to the author after publication.

Ownership of Material
The National Park Service does not copyright materials in CRM Journal. All materials written by National Park Service staff members as part of their jobs are in the public domain. CRM Journal will direct requests for permission to use other materials to the author(s). Use of any material from this publication must be credited to "CRM: The Journal of Heritage Stewardship, published by the National Park Service for the heritage community."

Submission of Materials
To be considered, articles should be submitted in both paper (1 copy) and digital version to the editor (see contact information below). The digital version should be in Word or Rich Text format and may be submitted on a disk or as an email attachment. All text, including quotations and footnotes, should be prepared in double-spaced typescript according to The Chicago Manual of Style. Because articles are peer-reviewed anonymously, the author’s name must appear only on the title page. For other types of submissions, an email message with an attached digital file should be used.

In all correspondence, authors must provide their full address, including email address and a telephone number where they can be reached during business hours. CRM Journal will not publish a manuscript that has been published or that is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
